About Paycheck to Paycheck
Safe and affordable housing is a necessity to build healthy and thriving communities. Unfortunately, New Jersey's high cost of living makes it difficult for many people to purchase a home or even pay rent. Who among New Jersey's workforce have limited housing options due to steep costs? While housing affordability conditions in the Garden State have improved, many restaurant workers, police officers, janitors, teachers and firefighters still cannot afford to live in the high-priced communities they serve.
The interactive database below provided by NJAR® Governmental Research Foundation (GRF) and developed in conjunction with the Center for Housing Policy presents average wage information for 29 different occupations and home prices and rents for all 21 counties in New Jersey.
Paycheck to Paycheck utilizes consistent measures of wages and housing costs so you can:
- See how workers in your county are faring in the housing market;
- View the big picture for housing affordability for working families in various occupations across the state; and
- Use these analyses as a template to examine wages and housing costs in neighborhoods in your community.
